Hello Edgewater 5K volunteers,

Thank you all for helping us pull off another great event! We quite literally could not have done it without you, I truly appreciate your willingness to come out and support a community event bright and early on a Sunday morning!

I'm sorry I didn't get more of a chance to check in with everyone yesterday, but the nature of a 2-hour event is that I'm busy for just about the whole thing!

Please let me know if you have any feedback on what went well and what went not so well from your perspective as a volunteer. We're always looking for ways to improve!

You're now in my database of event volunteers. Feel free to ask to be removed from this list at anytime. Mostly you'll hear from me before EdgeFest and before the 5K. I also share other volunteer opportunities in the community from time to time.

If you took any great photos yesterday, please send them my way! We're on a shoestring budget and did not hire a photographer for the event, so I'm crowdsourcing it!

Thank you again for your service!

Best,

Counselor in Training
Camp Kesem

Camp Kesem is a camp for kids dealing with a loved one who has been diagnosed with cancer. I became a counselor in training for this great organization.

Hello!

We are Ryan Condon and Sophie Spears and are the co-coordinators for the counselor in training program at the Northwestern Chapter of Camp Kesem, a student-organized summer camp benefitting children affected by a parent or guardian’s cancer.

We had Ruthie at camp with us in our June session at camp and she performed the required 48 hours of community service your school allows her to fulfill through her involvement at Camp Kesem. We wish her the best this upcoming year!

Speech
I gave a speech at 4-H about barrel racing.
Here it is:

Barrel racing is a rodeo event in which a horse and rider attempt to complete a cloverleaf pattern around preset barrels in the fastest time. There are different divisions in each class and there are normally 4 classes in a rodeo/show. Senior, adults, youth, and open. At the most there are 5 divisions. 1D, 2D, 3D, 4D, and 5D. Sometimes you don't place at all, but you still have a clean run. That's called falling between the cracks. If you knock one or more barrels your disqualified. It's a pretty amazing sport. Depending on the arenas the fastest times can sometimes be 11-14 second patterns(if it's a rodeo pin) and 14-20 second patterns (if it's a normal pin). It all depends on how big/small that pattern or that arena is. It also depends on how fast your horse is. Learning the pattern on horseback can be pretty hard. Teaching a horse how to barrel race definitely takes time and effort. But it's always worth it in the long run if you do your homework. It's a pretty difficult sport, but definitely my favorite.

Geography

For Geography, one of our main projects was creating a map of the continents.

English

For English my freshman year, my final project was to write a short story.
I wrote the following.:

The Sister

Molly had never met a person she liked. Not even her new baby brother, but she could give a hoot about Jacob, after all it wasn't Jacob that ruined her life.

Molly was only 13 years old, but filled with hate. She found joy in few things, one of which was torturing her sister Emily. Emily was born 9 years after Molly. From the very moment Molly’s mother Adalyn confessed with tears of joy that Molly was going to have a baby sister, Molly’s hatred for that sister blossomed and flourished. For 4 years Molly had been tormenting Emily. It started when Emily was just an infant. Molly would creep in during Emily’s nap times and take the hand made baby blanket that was once her very own and cover Emily’s face so tightly she couldn’t breath. As Emily grew and was able to walk, Molly found pleasure in setting up traps to make Emily trip or fall. At meal times Molly would take Emily’s food as soon as her mother left the room. These tricks and many more were a daily occurrence for poor Emily. But Emily, a kind and gentle soul, told no one.

And then one night Molly's parents went out taking Jacob with them. They left Molly in charge of Emily. They wouldn't be long. All was well, the girls were in the house playing with their toys. When suddenly Molly grabbed one of Emily's beloved dolls and ran upstairs to the attic. Emily ran after her trying to get her doll back. Molly, enraged that Emily was chasing after her, quickly turned around and violently threw the doll at her, which made Emily fall back and hit her head. Blood spilled everywhere. Molly tried to wake Emily up, but she did not respond. With no one else home Molly didn't know what to do. She went into a panic. She tied a thick scarf around Emily's head to stop the bleeding and dragged Emily's body up into a dark corner of the attic. Then she started sobbing, all the while professing how sorry she was. After some time Molly realized she had to do something. She couldn't sit there all day asking her dead sister for forgiveness, her parents would be home soon. So she quickly proceeded to cover Emily's body up with a dingy comforter and then moved an old desk in front of her dead body. Molly went back down stairs and scrambling, started cleaning up any blood she could find. When she felt it looked good enough, she went into their shared bedroom and made it look like Emily was asleep in her bed by using extra pillows and blankets to form a little body and then she  jumped into her own bed faking being asleep.
Their parents finally came home. They peeked in the girls room and seeing that the girls were asleep, they went to put baby Jacob to bed.

Molly laid in bed desperately trying to figure out a way to hide the body better or come up with a story. She was still in shock and couldn't think correctly. She decided to go to her parents room. She told them she couldn't sleep and that she had to tell them something. Her mother opened her side of the blankets and patted the bed, motioning for Molly to hop in. Jackson (the father) started to speak, "What's wrong, Molly? Did you have a bad dream?" Molly wanted to tell them what had happened, that it was just an accident, that she didn't really want to hurt Emily, but she couldn't. She decided to go with her father's suggestion and say that yes, she had had a nightmare and it really frightened her. Jackson and Adalyn comforted Molly and then brought her back to her room to tuck her in. Once they left, Molly then started thinking up a plan to get rid of the body and come up with a story. So many ideas were rushing through her head and then it came her! “Burn down the house!" She thought to herself “Nobody will know and I'll get everyone out safely, except for of course, dead Emily!" Molly waited and waited to make sure her parents were fast asleep.

Once Molly felt sure her parents were asleep it was time for the plan to take action. Molly remembered the gas can her father kept in the garage for the snowmobiles, she grabbed a candle, found some matches and walked upstairs into the attic to start there. She first doused the comforter and desk with the gas and then she lit the body on fire, followed by the desk. She then ran to the stairs. Half way down she realized the fire was out of control! She ran down the rest of the stairs and tried to get some water to put some of the fire that was following her out. Time ran out. The fire started to go through her room, into the hallway and then everywhere. It was like a monster was in the fire.
Molly ran into her parents room to wake them up. It was filled with smoke. She couldn't breath. "Wake up! Wake up!”, she yelled. Neither of them woke. She was so scared. She was starting to cough. She got out of her parents' smoke filled room and looked across the stairway and realized that the smoke had not yet reached baby Jacob’s room. She still had time to grab him. Her plan was failing. She grabbed Jacob and tried to run down the stairs, but the flames were too high. She tried to jump over them. She succeeded! She started to run down the stairs, but she felt a horrible pain running through her left leg. It was burnt up. She could no longer use it. It got caught in the flames. She started to limp across the floor, still holding  Jacob. She limped to the front door. She couldn't get it open. She was locked in. She limped as fast as she could to the back door. The fire was in the living room and the dinning room now. She made it to the back door. She opened it as fast as possible and got out. She started to go towards the road. She then turned and watched her house and her parents and sister burn.
Molly sat down and cried. She had to keep moving. It was cold,mid-winter. She kept walking to find the nearest place for help. It wasn't that far away normally, but she just couldn't find anything but trees and a road. Baby Jacob was freezing. It was like she was stuck in a dream. She kept following the road. She didn't recognize this place at all. She kept walking and kept walking. It was the same thing over and over again. Trees and a road. She then looked far into the distance and saw a person walking towards her. A very tall and rather skinny looking man dressed all in black. She couldn't see his face, but went towards him. She yelled, "I'm in a lot of pain! We need help!" The man said nothing and just kept walking towards her faster and faster. He got closer and she stopped dead in her footsteps with fear on her face. Baby Jacob was screaming and Molly fell to the ground. Nothing on her face but fear and shock. She couldn't move at all. She was frozen. She didn't know what was going on. She tried to move, but couldn't. She saw the man's face and asked softly and slowly, "Are you death...?" The man said nothing again, but nodded his head up and down. He then took the baby from Molly's hands, looked into the baby's eyes and then Jacob was gone. Nothing left of him, but the blanket he was wrapped in. Molly started to cry. She didn't understand what was going on. Her leg was in so much pain. Even if she could move she wouldn't be able to get away from this man who calls himself death. She felt wind brush her back. All of her hair stood up. She slowly turned her head to look behind her and saw her mother, her father, her sister and brother all standing together smiling at her. She turned her head to look back at death and saw nothing. She felt a sharp pain everywhere. Like she was burned to death.
She passed out.
When she woke up next she was standing...with her family once again.
